A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Game of Thrones! For Kids!

Fresh off the premiere of the Game of Thrones spin off Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, I am a little confused, but also pleasantly surprised.

When it comes to being a fan of the Song of Ice and Fire, I am very much an amateur. I have read the books and seen the show, and while I am not opposed to putting a theory iceberg video on in the background for some noise, I am not someone to take it seriously.

So, full disclosure, I have not yet read the Dunk and Egg books. But now I think I might have to.

The complete tonal shift from the OG Game of Thrones series and House of the Dragon is striking. It is more comedic, and even the music is more casual and modern than the other shows. It definitely wasn’t what I expected and even with the generous use of profanity and (I am not objecting here) Peter Claffey’s bare butt, it has this attitude of something more for kids.

Which makes sense if we’re focusing on this young fake knight and his sus little squire. The low brow humor is a welcome change to the overly serious entries in the Song of Ice and Fire cinematic universe.

The series premiere does a great job of setting up this dynamic and firmly placing it in the realm of the common folk of Westeros and not the royal game of thrones that the main series relies on. I am going to try and grab the book and see if I can read through it as we go. I am going to see if I can keep it up as the series goes on since there is only going to be eight episodes. It is a welcome change.

The “on the next episode” does hint at darker days to come for sweet Ser Duncan, with Targaryen princes doing their— wait hang on was that Bertie Carvel? And Sam Spruell? As Targaryen princes? Oh, dear, I don’t think the tone will last.

Well, that’s me coming back for next week.
